Supporting Friends Characters: Then and Now

secondary friends characters then and now

It’s been more than 10 years since Ross and Rachel finally got together leaving behind all their history, and still Friends undoubtedly remain the best television sitcom ever. We never get tired of laughing at Chandler’s stupid jokes and deep inside we still hope that Ross will wake up alone after his party with that ‘girl from a copy place’. Many of us would give up a lot to see them all together one last time in some kind of a Friends movie, but, let’s face it, they have all gone their own ways: we regularly see them starring in other movies and sitcoms, they appear in television shows, but they are not those 6 friends we used to know anymore.
And what happened to the minor characters like Gunther, Janice or Emily?

Gunther (James Michael Tyler)

Gunther Friends then and now

Tyler’s acting career started almost accidentally. He was invited to Friends sitcom to work as an extra behind the counter as he was working as a barista at that time. The day before the audition one of Tyler’s friends, a hairdresser, experimented with his hair. The experiment was not too successful and Tyler was left with the peroxide blonde hair. But when he showed up to the audience not only did he get the part but became the most frequent appearing Friends guest star.
After starring in Friends Tyler appeared in various roles on iCarly, Scrubs, and a few short movies. But looks like acting career is not the main goal of his life: he now does a lot of charity and considers himself a rock star writing tunes to play on his keyboard.

Janice (Maggie Wheeler)

Janice Friends then and now

“Oh. My. God”. You will probably never forget this tiny woman’s scarring laugh. Janice was the second most frequent recurring supporting character after Gunther. Their love story with Chandler (and not only with him) was sometimes even more exciting than that of Ross and Rachel. Friends was not Maggie’s biggest part, she also starred in the other US sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, had some smaller roles in Archer and How I Met Your Mother. She is 54 now, and she looks absolutely stunning.

Frank Buffay Jr. (Giovanni Ribisi)

Frank Buffay jr Friends then and now
Remember the guy who liked to melt stuff? Phoebe’s brother and the father of her triplets? How weird does that sound! Well, it’s all about him. He regularly appears on TV screens both in sitcoms and movies, most of his parts are those of a freakish guy, but he has considerably grown up and you will hardly recognize that Frank Jr in the man he has become.

Carol Willick (Jane Sibbett)

Ross’s lesbian ex-wife was originally played by a different actress, who later considered this part too minor for her and gave it up. Little did she know: Carol soon became one of the most favorite Friends characters and appeared in 21 episode. You will be surprised, but Jane’s acting career started in Santa Barbara TV series, she even gained some award for acting in it. Now Jane is mostly focused on her production business, she owns a Wild Aloha Studios and has already released four documentaries.

David (Hank Azaria)

David friends then and now

The love story of Phoebe and the scientist guy, who spent most of his time in Minsk, was lasting almost till the last season. Although Hank was playing a total loser in Friends, his real career us quite impressive: he has starred a lot in both sitcoms and movies, though his main career is now that of a voice actor (he is most widely known for being one of the main voice actors for Simpsons).

Emily (Helen Baxendale)

Emily Friends Than and NOw

Emily appeared only in 14 episodes of Friends, although she has gone through the whole story with Ross: they got acquainted, married and divorced. Turns out she was written out of the plot earlier than intended originally due to her unexpected pregnancy: she was not registered as a US citizen and simply had to leave the country. Still this fact did not stand up in the way of her acting career: her first two pregnancies were written into the plots of the movies she was acting in. Now she has a wonderful family, 3 children, and still finds time to appear on TV now and then.

Tag (Eddie Chahill)

Tag Friends Then and Now

Rachel’s immature boyfriend, who was originally her assistant and who she ultimately dumped when she realised she was ready for a more serious relationship, looks totally different now. His acting career is still going up, he is most commonly know for the roles of Jim Craig in the movie Miracle and Detective Don Flack on CSI: NY.
