When it comes to her relationship with Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith is getting real.
On Wednesday’s episode of Red Table Talk, the 48-year-old actress shared what she’s learned about her 51-year-old husband amid social distancing and quarantine.
After Jada asked guests Pastor John Gray and his wife Aventer Gray what they’ve learned about each other during this time, the subject came up.
The Girls Trip star said that she thinks one of the things that she realized was that she doesn’t know Will at all. She added that she feels like there’s a layer that you get to and that while life gets busy, you make these stories in your head, you hold onto these and that ideally is your idea of your partner. Jada then explained that despite this, that’s not who your partner is, and so, it’s going through the process of having to dissolve all the stories and all of the ideas of Will that she has built around those stories.
She then went on saying that the thing she and Will are learning to do is be friends.
Jada said that because everyone gets into all of these ideas of what intimate relationships are supposed to look like and what marriage is supposed to be, she and Will are in the process of him taking the time to learn to love himself, her taking the time to learn to love herself, and the both of them building a friendship along the way. She then told everyone that that’s something to be married to someone for 20-some odd years and then realizing that both of you don’t actually know each other that well, but also realizing that there’s an aspect of yourself too that you don’t know either.
In December 1997, Will and Jada tied the knot. Since then, they’ve experienced their fair share of ups and downs over the years, like any other couple, but still, they’ve remained committed to one another.- Advertisement -
During a 2018 interview with TIDAL, the Men in Black actor said that they don’t even say that they’re married anymore – they refer to themselves as “life partners,” where you get into that space realizing that you are literally with somebody for the rest of your life. He then said that there are no deal-breakers, that there’s nothing his wife could ever do that would break their relationship, and that she has his support till death, adding that it feels so good to get to that space.
