Michelle Figueroa didn’t expect that her positive news account would be featured by Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle.
Michelle was excited to disconnect and enjoy her time during her recent Puerto Rico vacation. She told PEOPLE that she had already set her mind to turn off her phone and just be present at the moment.
But when the CNN journalist powered her way back to her cellphone, she found an unusual amount of notification. As she said, there was someone who messaged her that congratulated her about the prince following her. She was shocked by knowing the news.
While Figueroa was taking a break from social media, her Good News Movement Instagram page made history as it was the sole account that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle followed on the said social media platform. Both were dedicated to their monthly tradition of changing up their follow list to feature inspiration and worthy causes and organizations and it was Figueroa’s page that they put a mark on.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s posted a Happy New Year greeting and expressed the continued tradition of highlighting accounts that inspire, and that reminds everyone all the good that is happening in the world. They delivered the news of shining a spotlight this January on @goodnews_movement. They also said that this journalist’s run-page has been covering acts of kindness and good news in the global community.
Figueroa was shocked given that there was no heads up that her page would be featured. She just sent them a direct message for her appreciation but hasn’t heard from them because they might be really busy.
Figueroa’s page is not new to big names as she has celebrities like Kristen Bell, Katie Couric and Jennifer Garner as her followers. But with the royal couple’s stamp of approval, her followers increased around 185,000 to nearly 325,000.
Good News Movement started last year when the network journalist was home sick due to a combination of the flu and ear infection last year. She took a leap of faith as she started her page that spreads inspiring stories both in Spanish and English. She looks for stories that show the good in the world and give importance to reaching people where they are by their phones. Moreover, she says that social media provides a boundless space for inspiring and good stories that don’t reach the newspaper or even the newscast.- Advertisement -
While Meghan and Harry began the next chapter of their lives by stepping down from their roles as senior members of the royal family, Figueroa still sees them as genuinely kind people.
