Meghan Markle spoke with an 18-year-old Black woman who was the victim of an alleged hate crime in Wisconsin – Althea Bernstein.
In hopes of being a small source of comfort and to offer their support, the Duchess of Sussex and husband Prince Harry called her over the weekend.
According to NBC News, after the young woman said a group of white men doused her with lighter fluid and set her on fire, police in Madison launched a hate crime investigation. Bernstein told investigators that she saw four white men and that one used a spray bottle to deploy a liquid on her neck and face, and then threw a flaming lighter at her, which caused the liquid to ignite, according to the police department’s incident report.
The report states that in addition, Bernstein was able to put the flames out and drove him. Her mother then told her to go to the hospital once there, where the 18-year-old was told matter-of-factly that the liquid was believed to be lighter fluid.
According to Wisconsin news outlet Channel 3000, through the president of the Boys & Girls Club of Dane Country, Michael Johnson, Meghan got in touch with Bernstein. Johnson also served as a spokesperson for Bernstein and said that for about 40 minutes on Saturday afternoon, the Duke and Duchess talked on the phone with the young woman.
Per Channel 3000, Johnson said that Bernstein and Meghan talked about the essence of self-care and allowing herself to heal, adding that for the way that she responded, she applauded her.
Regarding the conversation with Meghan and Harry, Berstein was “moved” according to Johnson.
Johnson also shared that she’s struggling – she’s very emotional and definitely, it’s a challenge for her. Today for three or four times, he talked to her, and he said that Meghan lifted her spirits.- Advertisement -
