Motörhead Day: Fans Celebrate the 8th of May

Every May 8, the fans of the English rock band Motörhead take internet by storm celebrating Motörhead Day. Motörhead fans take on every opportunity to show off their memorabilia collection or blast rock band’s music as loud as possible.

Motorhead Day: The 8th of May

Ace Of Spades: Why May 8

One of the band’s most popular songs and the one that made Motörhead popular far beyond England is called Ace Of Spades. The song was released in 1980 and spent 13 weeks in the UK Singles Chart, later being the title track for the band’s most successful album.

Motörhead founder and frontman Lemmy Killmister was known worldwide for both his unique bass playing style, as well as his rusty voice. And with his thick English pronunciation the phrase “The 8th of May” would sound shockingly similar to the real song’s title. Get it?

Special Surprise By The Band

Leading up to the date, the official Motörhead accounts on Social media announced that they will do some special for this year’s Motörhead Day.

Early in the morning on May 8 the band released a special face filter simulating the famous band’s mascot on Facebook and Instagram. The filter has already been used by thousands of fans who proudly post images and videos on social media platforms to display their affection with the band’s legacy.

MOTÖRHEAD DAY: The 8th of May, THE 8TH OF MAY!!! My friends know how much Motörhead means to me. And this Motörhead Day, the 8th of May, I’ll share with you a little story about me and the band😉 Many years ago I had a chance to see Motörhead live in my home town of Kyiv, Ukraine. Having bought the tickets way in advance me and my best friend decided to hang out by the hotel and meet the legendary musicians personally. And in order to not miss them we came… a day earlier! Thank God there was an old pub across the street from the Radisson Blue, right in the middle of the Old Town. Pints and pints later, we saw a dude randomly walking down the street towards the hotel. «Shit, it’s Lemmy,» we screamed and ran towards him. To our disappointment it was another fellow fan, who had prepared for the concert and grew exactly the same facial hair and dressed up shockingly similar to how Lemmy used to🤦‍♂️ So the next day we came back to the same place in the morning, and by the afternoon, the street was filled with fans, some of whom have travelled for thousands of kilometres to see Motörhead (There was someone from the Far East Russia and a bunch of other countries who travelled to Kyiv just to see the band). By around midday I decided to take a walk around just a bit, and when I was strolling back, my attention has been caught by a longhair muscly blonde guy sightseeing the nearby Golden Gates of Kyiv. Yet this time I wouldn’t let myself be tricked so easily, so I slowly came closer to… Mikkey Dee! Obviously told him a couple of words about the place and took a picture with the drummer. Oh how joyful I was to come back to the drunken crowd😄 The entire afternoon has been spent with a beer in hand and screaming the songs right on the street. And just by the time for us to leave to the venue to come in time for the show, Motörhead’s managers and crew came out and talked to me as one of the only English speakers. Through them we passed some CD sleeves to the bands for signatures, which were delivered to us by the crew right in the venue before Motörhead hit the stage (yes, in front of a bunch of other fans staring at us)😆 [Continued in comments]

The Instagram user metal_pilgrim shares a story of his encounter with the band and his favourite concert experience. The story involves some drinking and singing loud on the streets.

Motörhead-themed beer anyone? It is named after another Motörhead classic – Overkill

It is a well-known fact that many of the rock fans are also vinyl collectors. Another way to show your appreciation of the Motörhead Day is to blast the band’s music the old-fashioned way – on a turntable.

As reported earlier, celebrities are planning to cheer up the Class of 2020 with speeches and virtual proms.
